Minor: Sociale kracht van de media

Teacher: Mike de Kreek
Grading: 7.5
The minor 'The social power of Interactive Media' is researching everytime from different angles how interactive media can contribute to the quality of relations and interaction between human beings for 4 years. We're looking at the economy, society and culture in relation to interactive media. In the minor we question the intellectual property inherentence and analyse businesmodels for the production of today society. Intectual property is much more than music- and movierights, for example, fashion, design, medicines, software and education have both a positive and negative issue concerning the law around intellectual property.

Audiovisual Design

"Underground" was the theme. With my team The Descenders, Adem, Kevin and myself, made an elevator. This had different floors including the underground. We were struggling a lot with the idea of what the elevator should reveal. The making of the elevator was taking longer than expected and we couldn't really make up our mind about the floors. Eventually we decided that we should create an quit enviroment on the filmfestival were the final presentation would be held. This decision was made pretty fast and because of that the production and the base of this idea was not thought through well. This resulted that we had to make a report individually. Everyone was free in what kind of report that would be. My report is a song with lyrics and a report about Klik! Amsterdam Animation Festival.

The intention was to make an application for a primary target, my family. They would be the users and provide the content. Because of the fact my family doesn't live in The Netherlands but also in Indonesia I made a family website. My mother's lastname is Tombeng, hence the name. That side of the family is pretty big and we have good contact with a couple of cousins (that are not directly related). A lot of my direct cousins don't know how our family is related to eachother and how they look. With this application you can find out about the direct less direcht people inside the family. The closer a picture is shown from a personal picture the directer the relationship is. Aside from the family relations it's possible to upload pictures and tag people. This way it's easy to share facts about the newborn cousin. Recent photo's are placed in the middle. The farther the picture is placed from the middle the older the picture is. The pictures have categories, these are required to fill in when uploading a picture. There is a possibility to upload video and audio in case family members can't make it to an event but would like to review it at home. At the bottom there is a timeline. Here are birthdays placed and can also be used for navigation. Concept visuals

TDI case: Auto RAI

Teacher: René Prinz
Grading: RV
We made an application to promote the BMW Mini Cooper at RAI. My team was called "Mods", short for modifications, which included Michael and Dirk. We unanimously chose the Mini because this car has a strong character and we may later buy a Mini. The car has a unique selling point for being small. Mods contains only urban city people. With a small, fast car, you can easily move in a busy city. The car is nostalgic but also very up to date and focuses on a young audience. Costumizing has become a trend. BMW Mini has endless possibilities on their site where you can customize the car. We wanted to do this also but only for the roof. The roof designer is an application where you can design your own roof for a Mini. Here we do not use templates, but it is entirely possible to draw them yourself. View the application

Audiovisual

Teacher: Orpheo de Jong

For this course we made a short film (7-20 minutes) which consisted of clay. We animated this with stop-motion. We knew it was a lot of work but it seemed like the best. There were days when everything went wrong. But once a scene had succeeded, we got energy to continue. After much coffee, cakes and stuffed balistos the film was released on January 14, 2008. The site was also launched then.

Story: A classic story about a boy that meets a girl. His major problem is his insecurity because he falls apart in times of stress. This makes him clumsy and a bit weird. At a mall he sees a beautiful girl but he's too shy to make that clear. In the hurry and his shyness he falls apart, leaves without his parts and runs home. She brings his parts and a lovely romance begins. A Clay Romance [Love at first clay].

Dynamic Interfaces

Teacher: Niels Wolf

For this course I had to build an application using ActionScript. I have an application from Last.fm chosen to reproduce. The quilt to be exact. One of my priorities were when the mouse is hovering over an album a tooltip also moves along with the mouse. Using OOP (object-oriented programming) a student had to learn programming. This is not completely finished because I didn't always understood it. I thought it would be fun to make something you already knew. I found it difficult to use Actionscript without using a lot of buttons made in flash. View the application and some screenshots .

Interaction Design

Teacher: Harry Bloch

This course seems to me, a bit like a block of Visual Design. The assignment wasn't clear until the end. It took a lot of creativity. At the beginning of the block we experimented with letters. More precisely, the script for your favorite movie. Then we experimented with 20 screenshots of the movie. In the end we had to make something that had to do with the film. This could be anything. My application tells the story of the movie "West Side Story" through a timeline of the characters around it. I have drawn the characters and separated the gangs. The sounds come from Flashkit and Youtube.

Public Design

Teacher: Esther Weltevrede
Grading: RV
The purpose of this course was awareness of the amount of information/design/media in public spaces and the role of media makers, in whatever form, in the field of media. The end result is a visual report in the form of a chosen product design, video, digital or print. The student investigates a specific public space and the role of media in it and translates it into a visual design. View our banner, presentation and report.

Researchlab

Teacher: Remco Buisman
Grading: RV
For this course I have done a small study about downloading music. My target group was people from 17 to 25 years. The emphasis in the research lab is conducting field studies in which all stages are covered: the establishment of an investigation, collecting data and analyzing results, drawing conclusions and assessing research reports. In the research lab there's an independent investigation into new media and its influence on everyday life. This is processed into an examination report, which is also the final and key form of this module.

On Friday, January 19, 2008 I experienced my first fashion show. Fashion Week opened with Offschedule. Together with Mark Smith, Jesse Brothers, Justin Tieleman and Lars Koelman, we need to collect feedback from the visitors after the fashion show. There were two videobooths where people could leave their experiences. We had to put them online later in the week on YouTube . There was also a booth for pictures. This was called "Strike a pose". The pictures we had later in the evening put online on Flickr. View my report.

This was the first assignment of this course. There were no conditions except that it would have to be 60 seconds. The intention was to send it to theoneminutes. This is a game where creativity is at number 1. There are candidates around the world. I have not sent my video, because the material is not mine. My first idea was to create a view of life and death. You can experience everything, but if you die that could happen in a second .

We read the Pop-up book of Mr. Blanken about new media. With the whole class, we summarize the book and had an evaluation. Everyone made a blog about it and also one for the class. We were called Harde Lolly but now we are offline. We had to compete against other classes and have won. This is partly due to the cooperation of the classroom by actively participating in and posting your own posts. We also had stickers made to promote ourselves. If you are near the metro station Weesperplein towards Mauritskade, you're likely to see few stickers. Here are all the assignments.

The student is able to reflect on these skills and the student starts with a portfolio in which to make a resume which conclude a digital showcase and POP (personal development). The student, if necessary, is able to plan a costumized study.

Technologie en Innovatie

Teacher: René Prinz
Grading: RV
We went with the whole class TDI 4 to Living Tomorrow or the house of the future. This house was build a few years ago and wasn't very futuristic. It was more like the present. There were certain things in there that were very innovative and cool. We made a report about this house per team. This report should briefly describe what you did and what something about the technology behind it. After we had been at Living Tomorrow, we had some input and inspiration to think about. For the final project we have three good ideas to present and worked those out. Download the presentation or demo.

Using Media

Teacher: Joyce Barnhoorn
Grading: RV
In the first half of the block, the class was divided into teams to conduct research on certain topics. Radio and Television, Outdoor Media, Newspapers and magazines, and Internet and Mobile Games. Together with Dirk, Erwin, Jack, Robin and Oscar, we investigated Newspapers and Magazines. Each team had to present his/her research so you sort of had an expert had in your field. In the second half of the block we had to choose an external client. These were the Hamster Weeks of Albert Heijn, Adidas shoes, Gebakken lucht from Bolletje and street fashion magazine Code Magazine. I chose the last one because it challenged me the most and I wanted to see what goed around, literally, since I'm pretty open-minded. My assignment was more familiar with the target group. These are 25-30 year olds. It was very difficult to reach them. This I discovered when I looked at the site or magazine. The clothing is not very consistent or commercial. As a result, the output seemed rather similar who had chosen the same assignment. Download the presentation or view the media strategy of Code magazine and posters.

Visual Design

Teacher: Maurice van Zante
Grading: V
Many peers had the opinion that this was one of the most vague subjects. I didn't entirely disagreed with them, but it was getting better (partly because it became increasingly clear). The first few weeks we have focused on visual things. As a final task (this could be anything) I made an application in relation to music. Of course because I like that (just like the rest of the world, especially my generation). My first idea was to get all my favorite bands to put on a world map. So I was a bit concerned that the artists were scattered throughout the world, otherwise you get messy heaps. Because this became a lot I removed and I've limited myself to nine types of music, 9 different kind of bands with its own genre. View my assignments. Bekijk de applicatie.

XML

Teacher: Fons van Kesteren
Grading: V
The final task was an application that worked with XML. We, myself, Pieter Braam and Justin Tieleman made came up with an idea to take pictures of holidays with little stories or hotspots off on a world map. This was a nice collection because Justin and I have seen quite a lot of things throughout the world. We took care of the input and Pieter took the technical cooperation between Flash and XML.

Applicatie Ontwikkeling

Content en Redactie

This was a real CC subject. I thought it was fun to let my imagination go but still, there was more emphasis on writing. Sometimes I just knew nothing or sentences didn't flow like I wanted them to. For this course I'd made a newspaper of the future, PaperBite, which containt assignments that were made in the last semester. Here are some articles that could be written in about 40 years. Open the newspaper of the future.

Marketing Communicatie

For this course, we had an external client, Bertolli products. Here I've met the BO side. In a team of about four people we had to make a cross-media campaign. We made a final report and a final presentation. There were presentations in between to see whether we were on the right track.

Project: Iamsterdam

Teacher: Robbert Ritmeester
Grading: V
To promote Amsterdam as the city, I have created a product that seemed fun to do. This could be anything, a site, application online or offline. I chose an application on a pedalo. A sort of quiz to be exact . People can take a quiz while cycling in a relaxed way to get knowledge. Facts about the city and cultural things. This depending the destination of the user and what they love.

Studieregiepunt

My first creation with Adobe Premiere Elements or my first movie. We had to choose a song and make up some film material. Together with Erwin Rietveld we've made up the idea, filmed footage and took photographs. The song is from Lazyboy and is called "The facts of life". Just like the title says that's what the lyrics are about. From anatomy facts to cartoons. We used pictures to emphasize the lyrics. Because the chorus did't change we also put film with it. The most bizarre photos in the chorus come from a site verparacreer (eerst zien dan geloven).

Human Computer Interaction

Teacher: Sanne t Hooft
Grading: V
Usually you don't think about it but people can click a site or application away merely because it is way too long. Buttons may be too far apart or be located on an illogical place. During this subject we also thought about logical things. At first I thought it was quite useless because it was very obvious. It is indeed interesting to find out why something isn't useful, besides the fact that there are countless books that have been issued on the subject.

Kunstgeschiedenis

Teacher: Remco Buisman
Grading: U
For this we created a virtual museum. This had to contain four themes. Aesthetics, fascination, horror and a personal theme. My subjects were respectively: Architecture, Religion, Black Entertainment and emotion. In the application I used a soundtrack of the film "The Italian Job" (2006) produced by John Powell. View my virtual museum.

Ondernemen

Teacher: Peter Buis
Grading: RV
In this course we've created our own product. Our idea was to show news ticker in public. The location would be on a square or market. We had the Dam square in mind. It looks just like the stock news on Broadway, NYC. This kind of news would have various topics including sports, current news, film, politics, music, interior, foreign and local news. This would be financed by advertisments for businesses or daily offers of supermarkets. Every sort of news has its own color. It would be possibe that one sort of news had several lines of news. For people it is attractive to look at certain sentences, just like people have a preference for certain parts of a newspaper.

Ontwikkelmethoden en Technieken

Teacher: Justus Sturkenboom
Grading: RV
Here we have learned to use several methods to work effectively in certain situations. Sometimes it is useful to agree to a fixed price and time that a project must be completed on. I didn't like this subject that much fun because it was more theory. The situations and examples were interesting though. I think I will recognize it more in practice.

Media Design

Teacher: Irma Driessen
Grading: V
For this we made Kijkwijzer icons to clarify certain genres. I chose: thriller, all ages, from 9 years, from 12 years, violence, sex and discrimination. My own genres are drinking and aliens. In the second assignment, we played a bit with grids. There are two different grids being made. The one where the grid was made and another where it was broken. As a subject I have chosen a guitar and the whole evolution around the guitar (lute and electric). The third task was to create an interface containing at least four layers. All layers are accessible and they way to achieve this is free. Besides music, I find music in movies fun. A few years ago I've seen "Singing in the Rain". This musical is now on my list of favorite movies. So I have chosen it as a concept. I tried to imitate the scene in which Gene Kelly sings the song "Singing in the Rain" as if a person was sitting in a theater. The buttons are hidden and contain different assignments. There was also an assignment to give each ball a different emotion. View the sad, angry and happy. Download the first, second and fourth assignment.

This was really learning how to write. Before we had written an article, we have chosen a good subject. This included doing research, the structure and logical order. For me this was the first time I wrote an article. What remained with me was the sandwich technique. This means the ends are easily digestible and the middle contains the content. The ends are the introduction and conclusion, and the middle is where the story really begins.

Marketing

Teacher: René Prinz
Grading: RV
I always loved this course only because the lectures were given in English by Charlie Mulholland. We also have gained more discipline from René Prinz. In teams, we got an assignment from Iens. Iens is a restaurant guide. The goal was to gain more members and more publicity amongst their target group. In the beginning, many groups had the same kind of concept. Later it changed into creative ideas. Complete with a research we have developed an idea that was worth plenty according to René.

Besides HTML, this year I worked with PHP for the first time. Here we have created several dynamic applications like higher / lower game, the basis of a guestbook and the base with a custom database. We also learned that you can respond to an article and how one type of blog works. In a team we also have created a T-shirt company. It was possible to upload an gif or a jpg on your T-shirt of your own choice.

Project AHM

Teacher: Marjolijn Ruyg
Grading: V
This project was particularly instructive in terms of a team. I have experienced how unfortunate it can be sometimes. The AHM (Amsterdam Historical Museum) has commissioned us to make something interactive for young people or tourists. With my team we have made an application. It allows you to compose your own card from existing images. It could then be send to a desired E-mail address. In the middle of the semester the team was quite in a dip but at the end we somehow finished it. This part was quite exciting. The application worked well but just because of time shortage and lack of cooperation time felt longer than it was. View the content.

Cultuur en Media

Writing a lot and fantasizing about the future. We have done that for the most part. And watching for spelling and grammar errors. The assignments were collected in a digital newspaper that were made during the whole semester. A future paper to be precise. Besides other topics it contains an obituary and a future image of yourself. View the newspaper of the future PaperBite.

Ideeënontwikkeling

Teacher: Irma Driessen
Grading: RV
In this course we have tried to think out-of-the-box. Thee focus was on ethical destruction. It didn't matter if it was real or digitally (in form of a film). Though I don't remember what came first. The name of the team or our idea. The idea connected on our name, Color your life. The idea was to make a movie where a clean white sheet was smeared with paint. During the presentation, the movie is displayed. Next to the screen with motion and timing, it seemed as if the paint was thrown on the screen live.

Internet Standaarden

Teacher: Justus Sturkenboom
Grading: RV
In this course we learned the basics to make a site. Here I worked with HTML for the first time. This was a reflection of myself. It had to contain your resume and work of school. The intention was to keep it updated. Because we moved from Leeuwenburg to the Singel canal in 2007-2008 the server Oege (which contains my first portfolio) was in that building, this has become a thing of the past. Now there is a new server, step, but I always wanted to own a domain so I didn't use it. View the result.

Studie Loopbaan Begeleiding

There was carefully considered what direction you wanted to study. Whether this should even be the course that you want to do and if so, start thinking about what you want direction you want to graduate with. During a talk, I had to make a report about myself, where I had to present myself as a brand. I made an image with me in it as a brand, or, IamBrand .

User Centred Development

Teacher: Marianne Meijers
